Sergeant George Franklin was the only cyborg in Cal’s very, very small circle of AI confidants. The information that wasn’t shared with pretty much anyone, not for lack of trust, but because you couldn’t be forced to leak information you simply did not have.

He was aware of something potentially game-changing in the works, but as was so often the case with leaders, he was not at liberty to reveal what he knew to his men. But if all went as planned, they’d find out for themselves firsthand soon enough.

In the meantime, Orgalius was working with Rika, throwing a wrench in Urvalin operations across the globe, the pair popping up unannounced and laying waste to the enemy forces before quickly pulling back, leaving the invaders without an enemy to fight back against. But they were not alone.

More dragons had come to help the cause since the engagement began, and among them was Gazz, the ochre-brown male who had traveled to the other galaxy with Ara and Nixxus not long ago at all.

It was Gazz whom Nixxus sought out upon her return.

The dragon was flying circles around an Urvalin transport ship, peppering it and its support craft with blasts of magical flame while a handful of Earth ships swarmed the larger alien vessels.

It was a surprisingly even fight, now that the dragon’s magic was involved. Forced to defend against both magic as well as tech, the Urvalin had lost their advantage even if they were able to use their triumvirate of casters. Or, at least it seemed like an even fight.

A blast of powerful magic rained down from above as a large Urvalin battle craft joined the fray, its casters targeting the unsuspecting resistance fighters below. It was a classic tactical slipup, focusing on the ships around them and not the new arrival coming in quietly from above.

Had they been flying with an AI in their midst, perhaps it would have been able to multi-task mid-battle and notice the incoming craft. But AIs were in short supply, and most had been either neutralized or forced into hiding. It was a weakness the Urvalin had noted and were adapting to exploit.

“More from above!” one of the ships transmitted as its shields were pummeled by the strange Allpower spells. “It’s too powerful! We’re not going to be able to hold this one off.”

“Stick with your target,” another ship replied. “We’ve got them on the ropes. Land some damage before peeling off.”

Another blast shook the craft. “I don’t think we can withstand another direct hit.”

Gazz saw what was happening and shifted his flight path, putting himself between the newcomer and his friends. Being a magical creature, his casting was able to block the non-tech assault. He was still thrown violently from the impact, but his shielding spells held. He was, however, unable to provide cover to the ships farther below while engaged with the one above.

It was a quandary. Which direction to fly and whom to fight?

Out of nowhere a flash of magical
